Complete direct access information

What does direct access mean for you?

On 1st May 2013, The General Dental Council removed the legal barrier that prevents dental hygienists and dental therapists from having direct access to members of the public. Previously to this, a person had to see a Dentist first, before any Hygienist treatment could be offered. Dental hygienists and therapists are Dental Care Professionals regulated by the General Dental Council. We are NOT Dentists. However, we have been trained alongside dentists to screen the mouth for gum disease, tooth decay and oral cancer. Hygienists can carry out all aspects of non-surgical gum treatments and teach the prevention of oral diseases.

For the first time, members of the public can choose to go directly to a Hygienist for preventative care and professional tooth cleaning.

Many people are afraid of dentistry and put off dental visits for years. We particularly want to reach such people, because getting a professional clean is an excellent starting point to enter the treatment cycle. This does NOT mean a full dental examination by a Dentist is unnecessary!

We do not provide emergency dental treatment or prescribe prescription medicines.

Kim from Cardiff:

"Lucy has been my hygienist for a number of years and throughout this time her approach has always been professional whilst friendly. She is extremely knowlegeable and keen to impart her knowledge and experience, encouraging me to maintain a good oral hygiene routine between appointments."
